A Guide to Getting Married at The Brazilian Room

One of the East Bay’s most beloved, most booked, most beautiful park venue.

The Brazilian Room has been voted Best Place for a Wedding in the East Bay by East Bay Times readers four years in a row ~ 2023, 2024, 2025, and 2026. That’s not marketing. That’s photographers, planners, and couples who have actually been there, voting with genuine enthusiasm for a venue that earns it every single time.

Tucked into Tilden Regional Park in the Berkeley hills, the Brazilian Room is
one of those Bay Area venues that makes couples stop and exhale the
moment they arrive. You drive up through 2,000 acres of parkland, park in a lot surrounded by oaks and eucalyptus, and walk into a building with a story worth knowing: its interior paneling of exotic hardwoods ~ jacaranda, imbuya, sucupira, and mahogany ~ came directly from the Brazilian Pavilion at the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. A gift of friendship from the Brazilian government to the East Bay Regional Park District. Now your wedding venue.

The building strikes a rare balance: it feels genuinely immersed in nature,
with wooded hillsides visible through floor-to-ceiling windows on both long
sides of the hall, while still offering the infrastructure of a well-run event
space ~ AV, tables, chairs, kitchen, fireplace, piano ~ all included. And at
a price point that, by Bay Area standards, feels almost implausibly
reasonable.

WHY COUPLES LOVE THIS VENUE

The Brazilian Room holds a particular appeal for couples who want their wedding to feel completely surrounded by nature ~ not just “near” nature without sacrificing the conveniences of an urban venue. It is an extraordinary combination:national park scenery, historic building character, and a 20-minute drive from downtown Oakland.

Especially popular with:

  • Couples who want nature without the logistics of a blank-slate venue ~ The Brazilian Room gives you the wooded hillsides, the flagstone patio, the park views ~ and also gives you tables, chairs, a full AV system, a kitchen,
and a fireplace, all included. You are not renting a field and building a wedding from scratch. You are renting a beautiful,
complete event space that happens to be surrounded by 2,000 acres of parkland.
  • Couples on a genuine budget who refuse to compromise on beauty ~ The venue fee of $580–$5,500 is, by Bay Area standards, a gift. Combined with the included infrastructure, couples who come in with a clear plan consistently
report being able to have a stunning wedding at a fraction of what comparable private venues charge. The venue is beautiful as it is ~ minimal decoration required.
  • East Bay locals who want to marry where they live ~ For couples rooted in Berkeley, Oakland, and the surrounding
East Bay, the Brazilian Room is deeply meaningful — a place they have hiked past, a park they have explored, a building that is genuinely part of their landscape. Getting married here feels like marrying in their own backyard, in the best possible sense.
  • Couples who love history and character ~ The story of the 1939 World’s Fair, the Brazilian hardwood gifted as a
symbol of friendship, the building that has been gathering people in Tilden Park since 1941 ~ that history gives the venue a soul that no purpose-built event space can replicate. If that kind of origin story matters to you, you will feel it the moment you walk in.

What couples rave about:

The setting, always. The moment guests arrive and realize they are in a park ~ surrounded by trees, with the wooded canyon visible in every direction ~ is consistently described as the highlight for out-of-town guests especially. One couple described the venue as “easily the best reception site in the East Bay.” Another noted that “the venue is beautiful as it is, so there is minimal need for decorations which equate to more savings.”

The included infrastructure is the second most-cited positive. Tables, chairs, AV, kitchen, fireplace ~ all of it already there. No separate rental truck. No sourcing a speaker system. No wondering if the caterer has somewhere to work. Couples who have planned weddings at blank-slate venues describe the Brazilian Room’s inclusiveness as a genuine relief.

From a Photographer’s Perspective

The Brazilian Room is one of those venues that gives you multiple genuinely different environments within a very small geographic footprint. The flagstone patio for the ceremony. The wooded hillside behind the building. The meadow adjacent to the patio. The interior of the hall with its floor-to-ceiling windows and warm fireplace light. And then, just down the hill, the UC Botanical Garden with its pair of redwood groves. You can get dramatically different images without anyone getting in the car.

What I love most about this venue is that it rewards the in-between moments. The walk from the parking lot through the trees. The couple stealing five minutes on the lawn while guests find their seats. The first look in front of the stone building exterior with the oaks behind. None of these require setup or direction — the venue provides the context, and the images make themselves.

LIGHT & TIMING

Tilden Park is generally cooler than inland Bay Area venues — a significant advantage for summer weddings when wine country venues are baking. Late afternoon light filters beautifully through the tree canopy onto the flagstone patio. The floor-to-ceiling windows on both sides of the reception hall mean that natural light fills the interior from both directions throughout the day, and as the sun drops and candles come on, the hall transitions to warm, intimate ambient light that photographs richly.

If you are planning a spring wedding, check the cherry blossom timing carefully. Typically March through April, the surrounding gardens produce vibrant blooms that appear in ceremony and portrait photos in a way that is completely specific to this season and this venue. Catching them at their peak is genuinely worth planning around.

Photo Opportunities at the Brazilian Room

As a photographer, the Brazilian Room and its surroundings give you more portrait variety than most Bay Area venues. Here are the locations I return to every time, and what makes each one worth building into your timeline.

The Flagstone Patio ~ The Ceremony Stage
The primary outdoor ceremony space seats 180 on the flagstone patio, with views across the sloping lawn and the wooded hillsides of Wildcat Canyon beyond. Due to the abundance of natural scenery, it takes almost nothing to transform this space into an elegant ceremony site ~ many couples add only a simple altar or chuppah and let the park do the rest. It photographs beautifully from almost any angle, with the tree line providing natural framing. The adjacent large lawn adds a pop of color and depth to ceremony and portrait shots.

The Hall Interior ~ Windows, Beams, and Fireplace
Inside the Brazilian Room, the floor-to-ceiling windows on both long sides of the hall frame the wooded park even during the reception. The exposed wooden beams, vaulted ceiling, hardwood floors, and working gas fireplace create a warm,
character-rich environment that photographs with real atmosphere. Many couples enhance the interior with bistro lights or warm uplighting ~ a small investment that pays off significantly in reception coverage. The fireplace is a natural gathering
point and produces some of the most relaxed, genuine moments of the night

The UC Botanical Garden ~ The Short Trip Worth Taking
Just down the hill from the Brazilian Room, the UC Botanical Garden is 10 acres of California native plants, with two mini redwood groves that are particularly stunning when sunlight streams through the trees. The garden also hosts intimate
ceremonies for up to 30 people (maximum two hours). For portraits, the redwood groves and meandering garden paths give you environments completely unlike the flagstone patio above — lush, enclosed, dappled light. A photo permit is required
(approximately $408) and worth every penny. Plan 30–40 minutes and book in advance.

Behind the Building off Anza View Road — The Quiet One Immediately behind the Brazilian Room, a small open space off Anza View Road provides an open meadow area that is quiet, private, and underused by most couples. Great for a private first look or a moment of stillness before the ceremony when guests are arriving. The eucalyptus trees at the edge of the meadow catch late afternoon light beautifully in summer and fall.

A few insider tips…

  • BOOK AT LEAST 12–18 MONTHS IN ADVANCE — THIS IS NOT AN EXAGGERATION
The Brazilian Room is one of the fastest-booking wedding venues in the East Bay. Summer and fall Saturdays disappear within
days of the calendar opening — sometimes hours. If your heart is set on a Saturday in August or September, start the process
12–18 months out. The EBRPD website lists availability; monitor it closely. Weekday and Sunday weddings are significantly easier
    to secure and often cheaper..
  • PARKING IS 34 SPACES ~ PLAN A SHUTTLE FOR LARGER GUEST COUNTS
The parking lot accommodates only 34 cars. For any wedding with more than 50–60 guests, a shuttle from a nearby hotel or
BART station is strongly recommended. The approach road via Wildcat Canyon Road from the west can be windy and dark after
sunset; the back road via Fish Ranch Road and Shasta Road is easier for guests unfamiliar with the area. Put both options clearly
    in your invitations.

PLANNING RESOURCES

Because the Brazilian Room is a publicly managed park venue, the planning process has some specific requirements and considerations that differ from a privately owned event space. Here is what you need to know, and what is nearby for your guests.

What’s nearby for your guests?

Your friends and family won’t be short of things to do during their stay:

  • Accommodation: The Claremont Club and Spa in the Berkeley hills is the closest luxury hotel option — approximately
15 minutes from the venue — and a popular getting-ready location with its own portrait opportunities. Downtown
Berkeley and Oakland have a range of boutique hotels and standard chains, all within 20–30 minutes. For guests flying
in, Oakland International Airport (OAK) is about 25 minutes away, SFO about 45 minutes.
  • Restaurants and Activities: Downtown Berkeley has some of the Bay Area’s finest dining — Chez Panisse (the origin
of California cuisine) is a short drive. The Gourmet Ghetto on Shattuck Avenue has excellent options for rehearsal
dinners. Tilden Park itself offers the antique steam train, the merry-go-round, a public golf course, the Little Farm, and
miles of hiking trails — a full guest weekend without ever leaving the park.
  • Getting There: The venue has two main approach routes: via Wildcat Canyon Road from the west (take University Ave
east to Spruce, then Wildcat Canyon Road for 2 miles), or via the back route through Fish Ranch Road and Shasta
Road from the east (exit Caldecott Tunnel at Fish Ranch Road, up to Grizzly Peak, right on Golf Course Road, right on
Shasta Road). The back route is recommended for guests coming from the East Bay and is easier to navigate at night.

Questions about The brazilian room

Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot: May through October offers the most reliable weather and the best conditions for the outdoor flagstone patio ceremony. March and April are beautiful for cherry blossoms ~ worth specifically targeting if you want that ephemeral floral element in your photos. Tilden Park runs cooler than inland Bay Area venues, making it a comfortable summer wedding choice. For winter weddings (November–February), plan for the possibility of moving indoors and keep guest counts smaller accordingly.

Yes. Legal ceremonies are held regularly at the Brazilian Room. You will need a licensed officiant. The EBRPD events team can provide guidance on requirements and the approved caterer list includes planners who can help coordinate all legal aspects of a California marriage.

No ~ the Brazilian Room requires you to use one of their approved caterers. This is a firm requirement with no exceptions.
The positive is that any approved caterer knows the venue, the kitchen, and the operational requirements intimately. The consideration is that some couples find caterer quotes higher than expected — request quotes from multiple approved
caterers before committing to the venue to get a clear picture of your total budget.

Beer and wine only. No hard alcohol of any kind. This is a park district requirement and is not negotiable. If your
celebration requires spirits, the Brazilian Room is not the right venue — consider nearby alternatives like Piedmont
Community Hall, which allows BYO alcohol including spirits, for a similar East Bay park aesthetic.

For weddings of 125+ guests, yes ~ particularly because the ceremony (outdoors on the patio) and the reception (indoors
in the hall) are separate spaces with different lighting conditions. A second photographer means full coverage of both without the primary photographer running between spaces.
